Smashwords Preorders and Spotify Audio: October 1 News

Smashwords Adds Preorders so Your Launch Plan Needs a Real Deadline.

TDAM Self-Publishing News | October 1, 2026.

Draft2Digital added a preorder option at Smashwords. Spotify expanded access to free audiobook creation earlier in September. Writer Beware documented how scammers manufacture personal attention.

I want you to see the decision behind each headline. A storefront doesn't finish your manuscript. Free audio needs your approval. Personal attention still needs verification.

If you have one Christian non-fiction book underway, choose the development that affects your next decision. Leave the rest in your reference file. Finish a useful book and deliver what you promise.

PUBLISHING CHANGES THAT AFFECT YOUR BOOK

Smashwords now accepts ebook preorders

On September 29, Draft2Digital announced ebook preorders at Smashwords. You can list a release up to 12 months ahead. Smashwords charges the reader when the book releases, not when the reader reserves it.

D2D allows assetless preorders, but requires the final manuscript and cover at least 10 business days before release. Its existing Smashwords Presales option differs: buyers receive the book early, so you need final files before a presale. A preorder listing is a prerequisite for that option.

What this means for you: Choose whether your invitation promises a reservation or immediate reading. Those aren't interchangeable. Don't offer early access to a study group while your final chapter still needs revision.

Before you add a retail ebook channel, check any existing exclusivity. KDP Select's digital-exclusivity requirement still matters for an enrolled ebook. This isn't a new Amazon rule.

Your next step: Put your file-delivery deadline beside your release date. Check your ebook's current commitments before you promise another sales channel.

September catch-up: Spotify expands its audiobook beta

In its September 9 announcement, Spotify opened its Audiobook Creation Tools beta to self-published authors in the United States with English-language books. It supports EPUB files and requires a validated payment profile. Creation is free for up to five audiobooks.

The tools use ElevenLabs voice models. You can preview the narration and control pronunciation before you approve publication. Spotify labels digital narration and doesn't require exclusivity. Its Voices by INaudio integration offers a route to wider distribution; don't assume every destination accepts your particular audio edition.

What this means for you: This is a production option, not a worldwide eligibility promise or a guarantee of listener demand. If you live outside the United States, the announcement doesn't establish access for you.

Your next step: Check eligibility first. Then listen closely to names, Scripture references, and the passages where emphasis carries your meaning. Decide whether digital narration fits your book before you announce an audio edition.

AROUND THE INDUSTRY

A personal pitch still needs an identity check

On September 25, Writer Beware published examples of generative-AI scam emails. The evidence includes exposed template instructions and planning text for a later payment request. One example impersonates a publisher's editor.

This is an attributed investigation, not a claim that every polished email uses AI. The practical warning is simpler: specific details about your book don't prove that a publisher, agent, or book club sent the message.

What this means for you: An unsolicited invitation can sound thoughtful before it asks for money. Familiarity doesn't replace verification. Neither does an initial claim that the opportunity costs nothing.

Your next step: Find the organization's contact information independently. Verify the sender and offer there before you send money, credentials, or manuscript files. Don't rely on the reply address or links in the pitch.

Print planning reference: an IngramSpark deadline

This isn't a newly announced platform change. IngramSpark's current editorial calendar lists a November 30 nomination deadline for its December 2026 New Year, New You theme, including non-fiction self-help, memoir, and business titles. Ingram reviews nominations; it doesn't guarantee selection.

Your next step: If your finished book genuinely fits, add November 30 to your calendar and read the nomination requirements yourself. Don't recast your book to chase a theme, and don't mistake nomination for confirmed promotion or bookstore stocking.

YOUR CHECKLIST THIS WEEK

1.Choose the edition and channel your next reader invitation actually needs. Don't expand the launch because another account is available.

2.Record the release date, final-file deadline, and any ebook-exclusivity commitment in one place. Resolve a conflict before you promise a date.

3.If audio fits your plan, check territorial eligibility and assign time to listen before you approve anything.

4.Verify unsolicited offers through an independent contact. Keep the pitch and verification record together.

5.If the IngramSpark theme fits a finished book, record the nomination deadline. Otherwise leave it alone.

MAKE THE DECISION. RETURN TO THE PAGE.

Pick one checklist action and give it a place in your schedule. If your manuscript needs a finished chapter, protect that writing appointment first.

You can now separate a sales option, an audio tool, and a pitch that needs verification. The news can't choose your next step or hold you to the work. If that decision still feels vague, you need Clarity, Structure, and Accountability around the manuscript.
